Scarlet Lady cruise ship review: What to expect on board Virgin Voyages 1st ship

Individuality is a hallmark of the Scarlet Lady cruise staff, but in no way does the casual attire of the staff translate to less-than-stellar service. From the cabin stewards to restaurant servers, guests will interact with a diverse, funky, and fun crew eager to show all passengers a good time on board. Scarlet Lady offers accessible cabins across all classes, each adhering to ADA rulings with designs which have been reviewed by an ADA consultant. Entrance doorways are over 33 inches wide, bathrooms have flat-floor entrances, folding shower benches, and a generous turning radius of 1525mm, with grab rails and emergency pull cords.

Whispers of secret parties added an intriguing element to the overall cruise experience. The ship was a walker’s paradise, offering multiple walking areas like the jogging track on Deck 17 and the promenade deck on Deck 6, each with its unique charm. The acoustics were exceptional, with musical performances resonating throughout the lobby, ensuring a pleasant auditory experience throughout the ship. Virgin Voyages hypes the fact that it has more than 20 eateries on Scarlet Lady. The line gets to the higher number in part by counting all of the many separate food stations at Scarlet Lady's buffet-like food court. There are about a dozen of these stations, depending on how you count them.

Sharpen your culinary skills in a test kitchen that doubles as a restaurant. Designed as a no-kids zone, Scarlet Lady is filled with stylish, adult-oriented nightspots and bars promising a hopping scene late into the night as well as such hipster venues as a tattoo parlor and a colorful karaoke lounge. There's onboard entertainment that is innovative and sometimes edgy in a way that you don't normally see on cruise ships. There's staff that are there in part to encourage you to let loose a little -- or a lot.

All about the Virgin Voyages Scarlet Lady

For those looking to take their onboard accommodations up a notch, Scarlet Lady will have 78 RockStar "Quarters", ranging in size from 416 to 2,147 square feet. All will come with perks including early boarding, priority access to booking and 24/7 access to dedicated "RockStar" agents to deal with any of your rock star needs. In a new twist on the dinner-and-a-show concept loved by cruise lines like Norwegian, Scarlet Lady will pair brunch at Razzle Dazzle with a drag show by the ship's resident drag performers. To up the fun quotient, diners can pay extra for bottomless cocktails, with drag-inspired names. Cruise fares will include all restaurants, all basic drinks (including soda, bottled water and sparkling water), unlimited Wi-Fi (though streaming comes with a surcharge), all group fitness classes and gratuities. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service.

Better yet, said terraces will all feature custom-designed, handwoven hammocks. These hammocks do more good than just relaxing your stressed-out body; they were purchased from Yellow Leaf, an organization that fosters women's empowerment and community transformation in rural Thailand. Scarlet Lady will offer nine eateries, several of which are unique in the cruise industry. Geonbae is a Korean barbecue restaurant where diners can cook their own meals over flameless grills. Razzle Dazzle focuses on vegetarian and vegan fare (meat add-ons are available), as well as a juice bar.

For the past two decades, I've experienced exciting voyages across the world, discovering countless ports from the decks of dozens of ships, visiting 40+ countries (and living in some of them for years). I want to share everything I've learned and hope to make your next cruise vacation as enjoyable as possible. Being able to chill out at various times with a range of restaurants on the Scarlet Lady was appreciated. This flexibility was notably different from other cruise lines that imposed time restrictions on meal options.

Plus, there's no option for hot food that you plate yourself and take back to your room if there are no seats because you have to have a table to order food at The Galley. Sometimes you just need those steam-tray eggs, grabbable bagels and premade pancakes, and you don't want a waiter-served meal. The food was enjoyable, but it took forever to get served mid-afternoon after a tour. Scarlet Lady also has a supper club experience called It's a Ship Show, which takes place in The Manor. Virgin describes the experience as a mashup of an old-school variety show and a late-night talk show, with dinner, comedy and music. You'll want to make your dinner reservations as soon as you get on board.

SAILING PORTS:

Razzle Dazzle is a vegetarian-forward restaurant (with several, no-longer-secret meat entrees) open for brunch and dinner. At brunch, the spicy avocado toast gets high marks, and the cucumber-melon salad was a refreshing starter. Oddly, the restaurant had no jam for my British-style chocolate-chip scone and I had to make do with butter. Your server will bring the most popular of the appetizer, seafood, meat and dessert courses, though your table can turn down any option, ask for more of a favorite or request the alternatives (mostly vegetarian dishes). All the seafood (shrimp, octopus, etc.) is cooked together in the table's central grilling station, followed by the meat – without a thorough cleaning of the grill. If this bothers you due to allergies or dietary restrictions, make sure you inform the server.

Dining

I kept placing my toilet bag under the elevated soap dish and realizing the soap would drip on it. The only storage is in the closet area, and as in a micro hotel, your clothes won't exactly be hanging behind closed doors. One tall cabinet with a door houses four not-that-deep drawers and shelves, many of which house the safe, life jackets and extra towels. But your clothes will hang from a rack behind a curtain that you likely won't bother to close. In one corner is a luggage stand with two shelves, each with a wicker basket. Food ranged from edible to excellent, but meals were always fun.

This will require significant advancements in technology and infrastructure, and access to solutions that remain in development. And, Virgin Voyages is committed to working with the industry to support the necessary research and development to advance carbon-free fuels and to scale commercially viable solutions. The single-biggest threat facing our ocean is climate change, and we want to be part of the solution,”  said Tom McAlpin, CEO and President of Virgin Voyages. The ship takes an unconventional approach to cruise ship dining, with no main dining room, no buffet and no extra-fee restaurants.

Sailors will gaze at the sea while relaxing near the gorgeous outdoor Champagne table or kicking back in the hand-woven hammock chair. After they’ve finished soaking in the views, Sailors can indulge in some classics with their vinyl record player and a personalized, fully stocked, in-room bar. Then they’ll freshen up in the expansive top to bottom marble bathroom featuring the Roomiest Rainshower. She is about to change your cruise perspective with a host of firsts including being the first ship specifically designed for, and exclusive to, adults aged 18 and older.

But you'll pay a lot more in "extras" if sailing on Freedom of the Seas, where specialty restaurants, gratuities and Wi-Fi are not included in the fare. There are $2,000-a-night luxury ships such as Crystal Cruises' new Crystal Endeavor that include the cost of dining in all of their restaurants in their fares. But you don't see this sort of thing on the bigger ships operated by the likes of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line. But four days into my first sailing on Scarlet Lady, the hot new cruise ship for adults from start-up line Virgin Voyages, I am finding that I am not hating it all.
